Podcasting Equipment

Recently we have updated our equipment so I thought I’d add here exactly what we have used and are using as it may help future podcasters.

We began this podcast and our previous one with the Blue Snowball USB microphone. It’s an omnidirectional microphone and could pick up both of us speaking. It did give a very open sound and didn’t always pick up our voices well. We may still use this if we have a lot of people round but if it’s just Ian and Nikki this won’t be used.

We have now moved onto a mixer & mic setup. It was tough to choose a mixer but we decided on the Alesis Multimix 4 USB FX as it allows for a simple plug & play into the laptop. It has 2 XLR inputs for microphones & a further 2 mics can be added. It also has some FX for sound to add echos which we liked.

The microphones were a tough choice. We had limited budget so choosing with this in mind steered us to Behringer XM8500 dynamic mics. These are good value but good quality. The issue in choice was wether to go dynamic or condenser. In the end dynamic worked as we have a noisy road outside our house so these wouldn’t pick it up. A condenser may do.

Finally when on the road we use the Tascam DR-22 WL which is a great handheld recorder. It can use the omnidirectional mics on the top or can have a mic plugged in. Ideal for using at guests houses or at events as it can sit in a bag.
